![]() ![]() I don't see how the Mona Lisa, for example, could mean anything more than a cultural destination and exclusivity in the context of this video. Art can be mean different things to different people, it is never about one thing, but it was difficult for me to see the art which functioned as a backdrop in this video as doing little more than "flexing," as you put it.ĭo you get a sense that The Carters's utilization of historical artwork comes from a place of appreciation? Subversion? Both? Something else entirely? What are they trying to say?Īppreciation can mean a lot of things. ![]() For Carter, the jesus piece had belonged to Biggie Smalls, thus was something more than a piece of gaudy jewelry, and perhaps the Che shirt symbolized revolution, though of a very different sort than the rudimentary capitalism of the drug dealer, rapper, or entrepreneur. It reminds me of the story he recounted in Decoded when a reporter who had been interviewing him got distracted by the paradoxical pairing of his Jesus piece above a Che Guevara t-shirt, and that Carter was so taken aback by that. ![]() I do think, however, that the public persona of the rapper and hustler unfortunately strips the acquisition and appreciation of art to commodity. I also know the difference between the persona of the rapper JAY-Z and Shawn Carter the entrepreneur and, perhaps, aesthete. I know that JAY-Z is an art collector, and his in-ness with art world types has been well-documented (see “Picasso Baby”). The enshrinement of an image, especially something as ubiquitous as the Mona Lisa, can be dangerous, as it strips the work of art of its multivalent interpretations and only uses it as a sign that essentially reads: status. Another uneasy response was immediately thinking of those memes of Puff Daddy standing in front of the Mona Lisa, etc. Art was being used to signify status with no meaning outside of cultural capital and luxury. It's not the responsibility of the artists featured nor the director to give each painting its proper due, but I did feel like the art was only being used as a backdrop in this case. Now, obviously JAY-Z and Beyoncé looking at art at the museum would be a really boring music video (though I would love to be a fly on the wall to overhear their conversation about the Mona Lisa). Art is not merely a photo-op, and posing in front of art is reducing it to a backdrop. People photograph everything, look but don't see, understanding very little of context. My second thought, and I'm not proud of this, was, ruefully "cool, more museum selfies." One of my pet peeves is, in spite of how many visitors there are in museums, how little time people actually spend looking at the art. I'm less sure about this current project. The relationship between Julie Dash and Arthur Jafa's Daughters of the Dust and Beyoncé's Lemonade was, to my mind, a brilliant way to incorporate art in a music video, elevating the music and, in some ways, highlighting the artistic inspiration. The video itself is gorgeously shot, and does show a continued interest in art on behalf of the artists, JAY-Z and Beyoncé, to engage with art (notable precursors being JAY-Z's "Picasso Baby," and Beyoncé's use of David Hammons and Richard Prince in “7/11”). My first reaction, was being thrilled that art was being featured in a music video at all. ![]() Many of our voice actors have also gotten a ton of experience since FP1 by playing parts in anime or other video games – Sean Chiplock for example (Spade, Dail) has moved on to voice characters in Breath of the Wild, Alejandro Saab (Mayor Zao) voices the lead in Akiba’s Trip, and Dawn M. ![]() We also took comments about the voice quality to heart, so we rented time with a professional recording studio in Texas and had all of our voice work done in one place. For the second game, rather than try to write the story by myself, we put together a team of writers with more experience than me who drew inspiration from real world cultures and mythologies, and I think it helped significantly. I understand the sentiment, especially since RPG styled cutscenes aren’t something that is expected in a 2D platformer, but rather than get rid of them entirely, I would like to think that there’s a right way to handle it and we just haven’t found the sweet spot yet. Those who criticized the cutscenes felt that they were too long and dragged the game down. Strife : The story elements of the first game were the most polarizing part. The few NPCs that we’ve publicly revealed have gained a surprising fan following (especially Maria Notte, a bat news reporter with realistic arm wings). He wanted to avoid the use of clones to expand the NPC population, and while it’s definitely going to take a while to animate every NPC, I think the results will be worth it. One of the things I’m most excited about is the fact that our character designer Tyson Tan has created over 100 unique NPCs for the hubs. I would expect something like Shovel Knight or Shantae in terms of complexity. They’ll contain a lot of the optional story stuff that players are free to access or skip depending on their preference, and they also present opportunities to collect and buy new items. Our current plan is to include four major hub areas in each of the four main cities. With the introduction of collectible items and powerups in FP2 and the increased focus on world building, I feel that hubs are now something we can work with in a meaningful way. “It’s been revealed that Freedom Planet 2 is going to feature hubworlds! What can fans expect those to be like?” Strife: Hub areas are something I actually wanted to do in the first game, but I quickly realized it would be too ambitious and that there wasn’t enough side content in the game to justify their existence. While there are some things in Unity that required painful workarounds when they were a snap in MMF2 (like pixel perfect rendering), I don’t regret making the switch at all. Fortunately my experience with general code syntax from college, as well as some guidance from Christian (he even rearranged the default Unity to layout to better resemble Multimedia Fusion), I was surprised how quickly I got used to it, and I really appreciate the edge it has over MMF2 in almost every way but especially with performance and object handling, two of the biggest issues I struggled with in FP1. I felt pretty lost when I started working with the new engine in Unity. I’ve been working with Clickteam tools for over 17 years (I started when I was 11) and I’ve completely gotten used to its quirks and the way it does things under the hood. ![]() ![]() Did you run into any difficulties with that? Has it been easier that MF or a bit of an adjustment? What exactly do you feel makes Unity better than Multimedia Fusion?” Strife : There was definitely some heavy adjustments on my end. “So from the first game, you guys made the transition from Multimedia Fusion to Unity. ![]() |
